FAQ

Q: How do I enroll in Independent Study?

A: Call the North Monterey County office (831) 663-6154 or the Pacific Grove office(831) 646-6512 for enrollment eligibility before you withdraw from your current school. Complete the withdrawal procedure at your current school only if you have been approved as a potential Independent Study student by NMCCIS. Not all students meet the eligibility requirements mandated by the NMCUSD Board of Trustees.

Q: Will my credits transfer from my school to Independent Study?

A: If you are transferring from an accredited school, your credits will transfer.

Q: How do I get an official transcript?

A: Call the registrar, Carla Nason, at (831) 663-6154.

Q: How do I get a work permit?

A: Work permits are issued to students who are current or accelerated in credits. Work permits can be revoked if a student fails to meet minimum expectations for Independent Study. See your teacher or call the registrar at (831) 663-6154 for further information.

A: Students are expected to attend their weekly appointment, commit at least twenty hours weekly to school work, and successfully complete all assignments. Students are generally expected to complete at least 55 credits per school year, or about 3 credits every two weeks. At the first occurence in a semester that a student misses a scheduled appointment or fails to complete an assignment, a warning letter is issued. Should there be a second occurrence, the student and parent must meet with the principal or his designee and the student is placed on an academic probationary program. Should there be a third occurrence, the student is required to transfer out of the program.

A: Students may complete all UC a-g requirements at NMCCIS with the exception of foreign language. The foreign language requirement may be completed at a community college.

Q: May I take Community College courses while enrolled in Independent Study?
A: Yes, you need to complete a concurrent enrollment form, approved by your teacher/counselor, and you are limited as to the number of  community college units you may take per semester as a high school student.

A: NMCCIS students are required to take the same standardized tests (such as STAR and CAHSEE)  as students in comprehensive schools.

A: The K-8 program requires extensive parental involvement. For more information see the K-8 page.
